Story Telling by John Wheeler contact Scottish Story Telling Centre for more information

Multicultural, inspiring stories of unlikely heroes and demons outwitted, Welsh legends, Sufi and trickster tales, creation myths and traditional stories of magical, wonderful things in an otherwise familiar world, sometimes spiced with music from the penny whistle.“Stories are told eye to eye, mind to mind, heart to heart.”
- Scottish Traveller Proverb

John has appeared in national and local festivals in Scotland, England, Wales and abroad. Most of his work has been in the schools and libraries of the Central Belt and especially the South West of Scotland - from Islay to South Lanark and over the border into Cumbria.

People with hearing and other difficulties appreciate the way John tends to become the characters in the stories.

John Wheeler, our director, is a storyteller who's work is supported by the Scottish Arts Council through Book Trust Scotland. He is on the SAC Writers List and a member of the Scottish Storytelling Forum

War, Peace, Justice & Potatoes ( WPJP )

A storytelling project for gathering, sharing and telling stories of negotiation, creative peace-making, the search for settlement of disputes - stories of conflicts great or small, old or new.

The project takes it’s name from a book, ‘Potatoes Potatoes’, which tells of a family growing tatties in a war zone. It was started by John Wheeler in 2005 with a grant from The Scottish Arts Council (SAC).

The Scottish Storytelling Centre, and other organisations are giving enthusiastic support, UNICEF is especially keen to collaborate on work in the schools. Meanwhile, on World Food Day, at UN HQ New York on 18th October 2007

The United Nations declared 2008 to be
The U N International Year of . . .

The Potato!
- See www.potato2008.org.

Great news for the War, Peace, Justice & Potatoes project! Then in March The SAC awarded the maximum possible grant to The Catstrand (www.catstrand.com) for storytelling development- half of it for the WPJP project.

John is happy come and tell War, Peace Justice & Potatoes stories at your school - or festival or other special event. See ‘Schools Visits’ for details

The stories would be a multicultural mix of myths, legends, tales of tricksters, demons, bold women, unlikely heroes, and stories to celebrate earth, sea, wind, fire, stars and whatever else is relevant for the day or occasion, from home and around the world, with emphasis on the themes of the WPJP project

Not forgetting The U N International Year of the Potato!

More about schools visit
In Primaries:

Three or four, perhaps five sessions in a day lasting an hour to 75 minutes for the older children, 30 or 40 mins for the wee ones:

In schools with three classes
The oldest group can come back and have the fourth session as a workshop to round off the day.
This develops confidence and pleasure in storytelling and presentation.

Sessions For Secondary Schools,

three or four periods in a day to suit your timetable, often include creation myths and tales of magic in the ‘real’ world, passion, betrayal and honour from the earliest Irish and Scottish Legends and the Welsh Mabinogian.

Many of these already sit quite easily within the scope of the War, Peace, Justice and Potatoes project themes

Also Longer projects to develop
pupil’s self esteem and confidence
